The resolution addresses projected impacts on Skagit County citizens and infrastructure, caused by severe weather, rising temperatures, and rising sea levels as well as the increased cost of fossil fuel.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'">A 12-member Climate Action and Sustainability Taskforce will be appointed by subsequent resolution. The Taskforce will assist and advise Skagit County officials on how to satisfy the county’s commitment to the resolution.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'">Citizens interested in serving on the Taskforce are urged to apply by submitting a letter stating background, interests, and experience. Send letters of interest to JoAnne Giesbrecht, Clerk of the Board, in care of the Skagit County Commissioners, 1800 Continental Place, Mount Vernon, 98273 before October 31, 2008.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'">In conjunction with Skagit County staff, the Taskforce will develop a long-term Climate Action Program by the end of 2009. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>After months of planning and organization, Northwest Clean Air Agency (NWCAA) is launching the Climate Stewards vounteer program focused on empowering citizen action to address climate change in our community (Skagit &amp; Island Counties).</strong>   NWCAA is funding the program and is partnering with the WSU Beach Watchers and Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve to train and coordinate volunteers.  Padilla Bay will host 20 hours of training over 4 days (Mondays &amp; Wednesdays, starting 9/15/08; for times see registration form below).    Training is provided free and volunteers commit to pay back at least 20 hours of volunteer efforts over the following 8 months.  Once trained, volunteers will work with Skagit and Island County Beach Watcher Coordinators, who will provide programmatic support for planning and implementing projects.  Training will include an opportunity to participate in a panel discussion with local government leaders from Anacortes, Coupeville, and Skagit County.</p>
