Join us Saturday, May 16, 1-3 PM, at Sarai Stevens’ place in Bow for a special permaculture discussion. Sarai has transformed her giant yard into perennial and annual garden space over the past four years largely following permaculture and forest garden principles. She’s successfully dealt with challenges such as sloping land, poor soils, and lack of ground water and says “I continually try and make my life more meaningful and my carbon footprint smaller through my farm and the lifestyle I cultivate.”
Sarai will focus on how to create a low-input, intelligently-designed edible ecosystem with a focus on perennial polyculture. She’ll discuss earthworks, waterworks, soil-building, and farm-design basics that are applicable to wide range of sites. She’ll give us ideas on how to solve problems like shallow, dense, acidic soils, water shortages, shady sites, excessive animal nutrients, and steep topography.
We encourage carpooling! To share a ride, those in Anacortes are encouraged to meet at the Anacortes Lutheran Church at 2100 O Ave (they’ve graciously allowed us to use their parking lot) at 12:15. Those outside the city, meet at the Park & Ride at 12:15.
